Is web design the same as UI/UX?

Web design and UI/UX are related but not the same thing. Web design is the broader practice of creating a website, covering visual aesthetics, layout, content structure, branding, and technical build. UI/UX is a discipline within that process. UI, or user interface design, focuses specifically on the visual components a user interacts with, such as buttons, menus, forms, and typography. UX, or user experience design, focuses on how the overall journey feels, whether navigation is intuitive, whether tasks are easy to complete, and whether the user reaches their goal without friction. A web designer may incorporate UI/UX principles into their work, but a dedicated UI/UX designer goes deeper into research, testing, and behaviour-driven decisions that go beyond visual design alone.
